Usually photographing the forest on a bright sunny day doesn’t produce the greatest results. However, on a recent trip to Mount Rainier National Park, I was driving by Federation Forest State Park near Greenwater, Washington when I noticed beams of soft light highlighting small portions of the forest. I immediately turned around and headed into the old growth forest in search of these patterns of light. I chose my 80-200 mm lens to isolate the areas of the forest in which the light was shining. Later in the photo shoot, I switched to my 50 mm lens for some wider angle and close up photographs.

My original plan was to process this series of nature photographs as color images. Once I was in my digital dark room and started experimenting in Adobe Lightroom, it wasn’t long before I knew black and white was the way to take this small nature photo project.
