In the biting cold, I stood before the partially frozen Christine Falls, a testament to Mount Rainier National Park’s harsh yet stunning winter. The snow starkly contrasted the hard, icy surfaces like a soft white blanket in this black and white photograph.

The water, a silky ribbon in the monochrome landscape, cascaded amidst its frozen surroundings, symbolizing resilience against adversity. The absence of color only amplified the textures and forms, highlighting the contrasts between movement and stillness, between the harshness of winter and the softness of the snow.

I remember the day clearly. I was heading to the Paradise area of the park when I first noticed the falls. I mentally bookmarked the location, hoping to return after my snowshoe hike. As the day ended, I was back at the falls, the alpenglow of the setting sun casting a soft light on the surrounding peaks. The road was a sheet of snow and ice, and I tread carefully as I set up my camera.

In the near darkness, I captured three images of the falls, each a different facet of this winter wonderland. The long exposure rendered the waterfall smooth and silky, contrasting the icy surroundings. Using my telephoto zoom lens, I captured a close-up and a zoomed-out image of the falls, each telling a different story.

Inspired by the monochromatic scene, I created these black and white fine art photographs. The result was a series of 3 images that captured the physical beauty of the falls and the emotions it stirred within me. It reminded me of nature’s power and beauty and the small yet significant moments that make our lives story-worthy.

This experience was more than just a photo shoot. It was a lesson in perseverance, finding beauty in unexpected places, and storytelling’s power. These images are a testament to the power of words and images to evoke emotions and tell stories, much like the art of black and white photography.

As I packed up my camera and returned to my car, I felt a sense of accomplishment. I had captured some beautiful images and created a story, a memory that would stay with me long after the snow had melted and the falls had thawed. And isn’t that what being storyworthy is all about?
