Lower Crab Creek Coulee: A Meditation in Monochrome

A Black and White Photography Project Exploring Washington’s Lower Crab Creek Coulee

This black-and-white photograph invites you to explore the tranquil waters of Lower Crab Creek in Washington during autumn. The stream's gentle flow reflects the landscape's serene beauty, where weathered pilings stand as silent sentinels amidst lush grasses. The interplay of light and shadow creates a meditative atmosphere, encouraging moments of reflection and mindfulness.

About This Project

Carved by ancient Ice Age floods, Washington’s Lower Crab Creek Coulee presents a landscape where time, water, and silence converge. This unique terrain, part of the Channeled Scablands, offers a canvas of sculpted basalt formations and resilient flora.

In this series, I explore the coulee’s sculpted terrain through a black-and-white lens, offering a visual meditation on the land’s presence, time, and emotional texture.

This collection traces soft ridgelines, reflective waters, wind-shaped grasses, and subtle signs of human passage—elements that invite contemplation and introspection.

Each image was created in response to the stillness of the coulee, balancing abstraction and form to reflect a grounded, contemplative experience in nature.
