Reflections of Lena Lake, Washington

On a quiet spring day, my daughter and I hiked deep into Olympic National Forest. We climbed steadily through moss-laced trees until the forest opened up, revealing a high bluff overlooking the peaceful waters of Lena Lake. It was one of those moments when the journey was just as meaningful as the destination.

We stopped to share lunch on the bluff, catching our breath and soaking in the view. As we sat, a break in the clouds allowed sunlight to beam down across the far shoreline. The trees, rocks, and floating driftwood lit up in perfect contrast against the shadowed backdrop of the forest. I reached for my camera—not to document the scene, but to honor it.

This photograph, Reflections of Lena Lake, captures that fleeting light. A single tree glows softly beside ancient boulders, their shapes mirrored in the still surface of the water. To me, it felt like the landscape was pausing, offering a moment of stillness, of clarity.

The Creative Process

What drew me to press the shutter wasn’t just the light—it was the way the scene quietly unfolded. The contrast between shadow and highlight, the textures of stone and wood, and the calm reflection in the lake created a meditative visual experience.

Photographing in black and white helped distill the essence of that experience. Without the distraction of color, I could focus on shape, contrast, and emotion. It’s a language that feels especially suited to the Pacific Northwest, where moody light and quiet wilderness so often walk hand in hand.

This piece is part of my ongoing effort to capture the soul of the region—not as a postcard, but as a lived, felt experience.
